The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
